History

Gathurst Golf Club was founded in 1913, just before the outbreak of the First World War, with the original nine hole course formally opened for play on 23rd December. Initially, members used an old barn as a changing room, but when Shevington Church Cricket Club ceased activities, the Golf Club took over the old cricket pavilion and moved it to a site near the current 12th tee. For many years, the entrance to the course was from Gathurst Lane and the Club House located at the southern end of the old course, near to Gathurst canal bridge.

In 1958, the Ministry of Transport compulsory purchased much of the land occupied by the golf course, so, with the compensation payment, additional land to the west and north was bought.

The new clubhouse was constructed and opened on it’s present site in 1961 together with a new access road from Miles Lane. The nine holes were re-configured and three additional holes added near the railway and canal locks to create what we now know as holes 7 to 18.

The course changed little for 30 years until the long held ambition to have a full 18 holes was fulfilled in the early 1990’s, when further land was purchased to finally create the course as we know it today. Gathurst Golf Club has now become one of the most popular and picturesque courses in the North West of England and its members are eagerly looking forward to the centenary of the club in 2013.
